Meet the MCAP Commercial Mortgages Team: Hasnain Asghar

Hasnain Asghar is a team member in our Toronto office, and we had the pleasure of asking him a few questions about his experience and his team in a recent conversation.

Hasnain, could you tell us about your background and experience in the industry?

I have been in the commercial lending industry for 8 years. I began my career at one of Canada’s largest banks in 2015 as a Credit Analyst within their Group Risk Management Division assisting in the adjudication of commercial mortgages for high-net-worth borrowers. In 2019, I transitioned into their Commercial Real Estate Advisory Group as a Commercial Mortgage analyst. During this time, I completed annual reviews, assessed mortgage modification requests, finalized renewals, and underwrote refinance requests. I then joined the Commercial Mortgages Group at MCAP in April 2020 as an analyst in the origination team and was promoted to Associate Director in March 2023. In terms of my post-secondary education, I attended York University where I graduated with an Honours BCom degree specializing in Finance.

How do you approach difficult or complicated deals?

Before entering into any difficult scenario, I think it's important to conduct thorough research on the market, the company, or individual I’ll be dealing with, and the specific terms of the deal. It's important to take the time to get to know our clients in-depth so we can remain focused and driven towards a mutual goal.

As well, because of our extensive background and the volume of deals we work with, as a team, we have a lot of experience to draw on and reference back to. This makes it easier and faster for us to problem-solve and find creative solutions that will work in new situations.

I’ve also learned that communication is crucial in any complicated situation. Be clear about your objectives and expectations.
